Colleagues,

  1. Membership meeting: On Wednesday, February 28 starting at 4 PM, we will be holding at NTU Membership meeting at Oliver Street School.  On the agenda for this meeting we will discuss:
  • Contract Reopener for School Year 2018-2019
  • Observations and Evaluations
  • NTU Recommitment Campaign (What is Janus and how can we best prepare for Janus’s impact)
  • Building Rep Reorganizing
  • Local Control – Next Steps

The Union is the Voice of its members, let us hear from you!!

-----------------------------------------

  1. Flu Concerns
: We have heard concerns from our members about the possibility of getting infected with the flu virus. There have already been 30+ childhood flu deaths nationwide so far in 2017-2018. Educators, parents and staff can help slow the spread of respiratory illnesses like colds, and influenza (flu). The Center for Disease Control has information on preventing the flu as well as materials and tools for schools. Click here

These resources include everyday preventative actions that help reduce the chance of infection.

  1. IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL STAFF: Imperative! If you make a report concerning students to your administrator, make sure you put it in writing and not just a verbal report.  Keep a copy for yourself!  Otherwise, an administrator can deny you ever reported it and you will be on the hook.  DYFS cases are mounting!  Please discuss do’s and don’t with your colleagues!

4) Special Education Assistance - The NTU has an email set up for members to get assistance with special education questions and issues: NTUSpEd@NewarkTeachersunion.com.  We are also working on getting a Special Education Council in place to review bigger issues regarding Child Study Team and Special Education Issues.  More to come.

5) The JANUS DECISION - The NTU, and every union across the country is anticipating a decision by the US Supreme Court within the next two months on the JANUS v AFSCME case (The JANUS case).  This case is another attack on Unions of every kind and its decision may have IMMEDIATE ramifications.  We are cooperating with our State and National unions to develop a plan of action should the decision come down against unions.  Now more than ever, we must remain UNION STRONG and UNITED.

AFL-CIO also has a online Petition to tell the U.S. Supreme Court: Protect working people’s rights to organize, and stop dangerous right-to-work laws that hurt working people!

6)      Member Services: Members should never hesitate to communicate with us by phone, email, etc  regarding any of the issues we handle at the Newark Teachers Union.

Your Union in Action: what was going on an NTU this week?

  • NTU leadership had our first Consultative Meeting with NPS under Acting Superintendent Gregory.  There is still a lot of work to be done, but it was a productive conversation and we believe will be able to move forward on several issues.
  • Per Diems who were docked for the delayed opening saw their pay restored.
  • Over the weekend, Newark hosted leaders from several AFT locals to discuss strategies for organizing and political actions.

Reminder!  If you are in the area, swing by the NTU offices to pick up your NTU insulated coffee/tea travel mug. You can even fill it for free.
