Click here for PDF version of this update

Colleagues,

NTU Hall of Fame Dinner:  This year’s Hall of Fame Dinner was a huge success! We provided 14 students with scholarships and Honored 12 NTU members, and we presented our first ever Legacy Award to former NTU Sec/Treasurer Christine “Roz” Samuels.

Next week, we will have more pictures, but please visit the link above to see the album on our Facebook page (please tag yourself & share). Our scholarship program depends on your support and that of our sponsors. Thank you very much for supporting the NTU and our children!

mSGP FAQ’s – Some teaching staff may have received notice that their evaluation had been impacted by their mSGP (Median Student Growth Percentile).

What is mSGP? – A measurement used on teachers in PARCC tested grades to assess student growth level.

How does mSGP impact my evaluation? – Under NJ law, mGSP (for impacted staff) makes up 30% of a teacher’s evaluation.  We had been able to get an equivalency waiver the last few years to hold that back from Newark.  Our governor has spoken out against PARCC, so we are working with our union, community, and legislative contacts to minimize this impact moving forward.

What can I do to appeal my mSGP? – There is a process on the state’s ACHIEVENJ website that can be used to appeal mSGP.  Click here for more information (page 2)

2018-2019 Calendar

According to NPS, the School Calendar will be reviewed by the School Board at Tuesday’s meeting, and released after that!

End of the Year Evaluations – If you disagree with your Annual Evaluation, it is important to write an appeal to NPS’s Evaluations Office and the Peer Oversight Committee.  Email your appeal to evaluations@nps.k12.nj.us

Make sure you include all evidence you can provide that the evaluation is not an accurate representation of you!  NTU has put together some rebuttal tips we hope will assist you in this effort!  If you need help on your appeals, reach out to mmaillaro@newarkteachersunion.com and miovino@newarkteachersunion.com.

Also important, IF your personal days or FMLA days are being counted against you on competency 5, LET US KNOW IMMEDIATELY!

If you are already on a CAP and received a Partial Effective or Ineffective on your Annual Evaluation, you may be facing tenure charges!  CALL THE NTU IMMEDIATELY!

Attention Non-Tenured Teachers!

Newark Teachers Union has opened up a website dedicated to answering your questions about what to do when you are given a termination letter, a contract, or hear nothing at all from Newark Public Schools by the May 15 deadline.

Please review this information, it could save your career!
