NTU Updates

Colleagues,

1) Kudos – The new NTU website is regularly updated with a wide variety of important information, including a calendar of events, and how to’s for topics like FMLA’s.  If you have anything you’d like added to the website (kudos, pictures/videos from your school, etc), just send it to mmaillaro@newarkteachersunion.com.. There a lot of amazing things going on in the Newark Public Schools, and it’s important to highlight them!

2) Pre-K to 8 Prep Period Survey – In order to monitor implementation of the new contract settlement, we ask that all Pre-K to 8th grade teachers fill out this

Colleagues,

1) NTU Calendar Books – This is the question we get most at the NTU this time of year “Where is my Calendar book?” The 2017-2018 calendar book is currently at the printer and we hope to have it out to the membership in the next week or so.

2) NTU Contract Books – We are working with NPS on finalizing the new Contract Books. We hope to have a digital version on the website next week and the print copy available soon after.

3) NTUniversity: The NTU is in the process of developing a calendar of workshops for members and we are requesting proposals. If you are interested in presenting to

Colleagues,

1) State votes to restore Newark to Local Control! This week, we get to celebrate a historic moment 22 years in the making! The State Board of Education heard a motion to return Newark to local control, and this motion passed unanimously! We have all worked very hard to get this victory, and we all deserve to take a moment to celebrate.

That said, this doesn't mean the struggle is over! This transition will not happen over night. From here on out, it is a legislative process. We have already communicated with the Newark Board of Education our congratulations and our request to be

Colleagues,

1) Retro PaymentFor those eligible, your first of two retro payments was posted today. If there is a problem with your retro or you have any questions, YOUR FIRST CALL/EMAIL needs to be to your employer the NPS. There are a variety of things that could have an impact on the amount, including longevity, withholding of increments, unpaid leaves, increment start date (either Feb or Sept), etc. The NTU has no way of tracking down each member’s individual reason why their retro may not be what they expected.

You can reach out to the NPS Contact Center at 973-733-7333 or you can use the

Colleagues,

1). Calendar Update  - As you are all aware, your employers have decided to cut short your Summer vacation an entire week with little notice.  While we are working hard to ensure that you don't have to come back so soon, the most powerful way to make that happen is in the strong hearts and hands of NTU Members.

Many of you have vacation plans, many of you have to take your kids off to college, many of you planned on relaxing.  How many of you will take your concerns to where your employer must listen to you?  How many will take the time to tell your employer that you are tired of

Colleagues,

 1) Calendar Update - On Friday, May 26th at 2 p.m. the NPS provided us with a draft of SY17/18 Calendar.  NTU President John M. Abeigon and the NTU Negotiations Team had numerous concerns about the calendar.   We shared those concerns on Tuesday morning in a meeting with NPS senior staff.

Today the NPS FINALLY released the calendar. While many issues we brought up have been resolved, the district has chosen to start the school year on August 28, effectively trying to turn NTU members into 11 month employees.  To prevent rumor, THIS WAS NOT NEGOTIATED IN OUR NEW CONTRACT.  We
