Message from Dr. Reilly

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The impact of excellent teachers on students' lives cannot be understated. As we edge into the last month of school, it is with great pleasure that we use this space to acknowledge two of the many fine teachers in Newark Public Schools. We want to honor Wahab Ashraf, who teaches College Prep and Advanced Placement biology classes to students from Science Park High School. Mr. Ashraf was named the Outstanding NJ Secondary School Teacher by Princeton University this past May. He is one of only four teachers to receive this honor this year.  Princeton University has been awarding outstanding high school teachers since 1959.

We also want to acknowledge Science Park High School debate teacher and leader, Jonathan Alston, who received the highest honor for any high school speech and debate coach by being elected to the National Speech & Debate Association Hall of Fame.  Way to go, Mr. Alston! He was one of six inductees to be selected for this honor.

Congratulations to Mr. Ashraf and Mr. Alston. We are so proud of you and want to thank you for the differences you make in students' lives.

Sincerely,

Dr. Reilly

June Calendar of Events

The month of June is filled with many exciting culminating activities. The list of people who assist the departments featured literally spans the entire organization. The Superintendent wants to recognize the Deputy and the Office of Academic Services (and T&L), the School Business Administrator (and all of her departments and IT), and his staff and the members of the Communications Department who are all key in making all of this happen. Some are either information for you, about you, or require an action, so please read carefully. Here is a highlight of the next few weeks:

June 1- High School Vocal Jubilee: This event will be at Newark Symphony Hall at 7 pm. The Office of Visual & Performing Arts (OVPA) continues to showcase the incredible talent in our schools. A big thank you to them and the Music Teachers in our schools.

June 2- Senior Day: The Superintendent is taking Seniors from the Class of 2023 who have met graduation requirements to Forest Lodge. Senior Class Advisor(s), Homeroom Teachers, and Chaperones are reminded to set expectations, secure permission slips, and tell Seniors to get ready for lots of eating and fun. This will be the largest gathering of Seniors who qualify for graduation. The number in attendance will be well over 2,300 Seniors. Incredible.

June 3- Elementary Basketball Championship Finals: This has been an incredible season with great talent in the middle grades. A big congratulations to Extended Learning Time, Athletics, our coaches, and all of the teams. Who will be the city’s champions? Come show support at Weequahic beginning at noon.

June 6- RAMP Concert: This event will be at NJPAC at 10 am. Our students in the elementary grades will be showcased for all to see their greatness. The OVPA and music teachers in the elementary schools are making big things happen in our schools.

June 7- Seal of Biliteracy Event: This event will be at East Side at 6 pm. We have 140 students who have successfully completed and qualify for this recognition. The Bilingual Department and bilingual staff across the schools should be very proud of this major accomplishment.

June 9- Academic Awards Night: The Superintendent is hosting this annual event for Seniors in the Class of 2023 who have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher. This year, we have the largest number of Seniors who meet this criteria- 484 Seniors. In the presence of their principals, families, and staff, Seniors are called by GPA to receive a medallion to be worn at graduation, proclamations, and gifts. The event is followed by dinner. We will find out that evening the Senior with the highest GPA in Newark. Who will that Senior be and from what high school? School Counselors, Senior Class and National Honor Society Advisors, and Homeroom Teachers are reminded to make sure that students and their guests are notified, if you have not already done so. This event will be held at Central High School and will begin at 5 pm sharp.

June 10 - Cheerleading Championship: Our cheerleaders have been demonstrating their strength, athleticism, school pride and spirit all season. The finals are just two weeks away. The cheerleading coaches are making moves. Come show your support at Weequahic at noon.

June 10 - Hiring Fair: This is our district-wide hiring fair for all titles at Barringer at 10 am. While the impact of the national teacher shortage throughout the country remains very real, we believe that our multi-prong approach in our recruitment and retainment strategy enabled us to hire 700 teachers over this past summer in preparation for this school year. YOU have been a critical factor in our ability to hire teachers at record numbers. We have had the lowest number of teacher vacancies in years. For next school year, we have created over 200 additional positions in the schools. How is this even possible? The expansion of schools by grade, the opening of new schools, and the high school redesign strategy has resulted in parents voting with their feet and walking our way. Our enrollment is increasing. Big thanks to HRS and Newark Enrolls.

June 13- Other Side of Newark Concert: Three-time Grammy Award winning artist Jerry Wonda is working with ten former students who are now rappers. This talent is incredible and will be featured in ten songs they created with videos produced in our schools over the past few months. Our current students were also featured in these videos and have contributed greatly to the success of these up and coming artists. The high school SLT has spearheaded this work and will show out at the red carpet event where the releases will drop at Central at 6 pm.

June 15- Teacher of the Year Ceremony: New Jersey has an annual event where one teacher of the year is to be selected from each district, and then amongst those teachers, the state selects the one teacher to represent the state. In Newark, the state’s largest district, we have so many qualifying teachers for this honor that we just can’t pick one. On this day, the Superintendent hosts a breakfast to honor one teacher from each school, identified by each school, for this district honor. We will learn at this event who is the one teacher who will represent Newark because the state still only allows districts to make one recommendation. The Office of Educator Effectiveness and school leaders help make this event possible. Who will that teacher be and from what school?

June 23- Commencement Exercises: This is such an exciting day where hard work and commitment to excellence yields one (of many more to come) major accomplishment in the incredible lives of our students. The Superintendent’s $4,000 Scholarship goes to one Senior from each high school at the graduation ceremony. We will also distribute two laptops to two Seniors at the ceremony. Who will these 3 Seniors be from each high school? Job well done by all of our students and a big thank you to their parents, families, friends, teachers, school administrators, and staff. To the 8th graders, we are so proud of you. We see you too and are honored that you are coming to our high schools. Congratulations Class of 2023!

Rather than going through local schools and coming to Central Office, students will simply visit the site below and be walked through a few easy steps. The Office of Attendance wants to be sure that school counselors, administrators, students, and parents know about the new process so that no teenager experiences a delay in obtaining working papers.
