Victory, but still a long way to go...

Dear Colleagues,

Today, we get to celebrate a historic moment!  The State Board of Education heard a motion to return Newark to local control, and this motion passed unanimously!  We have all worked very hard to get this victory, and we all deserve to take a moment to celebrate.  That is why we invite everyone to join at at Newark City Hall today to "CELEBRATE THE RETURN TO LOCAL CONTROL" with Mayor AFT President Randi Weingarten, the city Council, and Newark Chief Education Officer Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson on Wednesday, September 13, at 3:30 p.m.

That said, this doesn't mean the struggle is over!  This transition will not happen over night.  From here on out, it is a legislative process.  It will be important to monitor WHO is on the transition team and how the process will be carried out.  We still need to remain vigilant. We will be monitoring the transition closely and doing everything in our power to expedite their exit.

In Solidarity,

John M. Abeigon
