On Wednesday, March 16th at 4:30 PM, the Newark Board of Education will broadcast the 2022 Young Artists Annual featuring students in grades 6-8. This event first debuted in 2021 and celebrates student artwork, music compositions, and performances in acting, dance, and music. Each year, a theme is established and young artists create work inspired by the theme. The 2022 theme “My Self, My Feelings, My Hopes and Dreams,” encourages students to create and perform works of art reflecting optimistic self-awareness about who they are, how they feel, and what they have learned from their experiences; while inspiring us with their personal hopes and dreams.

In accordance with the guidance shared by the Superintendent, all students and school staff will be required to test for COVID-19 prior to return from Spring Break. For your convenience, all schools will receive a Spring Break COVID-19 Testing Kit to distribute to each student and employee the week of April 11th. Each kit will include rapid tests and a set of instructions to process the test.
Students and school staff must complete the test on Sunday, April 24th prior to returning to school on Monday, April 25, 2022. All homeroom teachers will need to advise students to make them aware of this expectation. Anyone who has tested positive in the last 90 days is not required to retest during Spring Break.
Staff must follow the process of notifying Health Services of positive test results. Parents of students must notify their school nurse of positive test results. Additional details will be provided closer to Spring Break.
Announcement of Trauma Focused Certification Contest (New)
On February 3rd, we invited all Social Worker 2s to enter a contest to win a fully paid Trauma Certificate Program offered by the National Association of Social Workers and receive 20 CEUs towards their license. A special congratulations goes to the winners of the contest featured below. Winners will receive paid sessions and earn CEU credits courtesy of the Office of Social Work. 2022 Essex Vicinage Law Day Program for Schools(New)
The Superior Court of New Jersey - Essex Vicinage Law Day Planning Committee, in partnership with the Essex County Bar Association, invite you to register to participate in our annual Law Day Program. Our District is excited to announce that we are celebrating Read Across America all month. It is a nationwide Reading Celebration! As a part of our districtwide celebration, we are inviting families to join in the fun. Each student in Kindergarten through 3rd grades will receive a bookbag, a picture book and student supplies.
We are asking that you support Parent Liaisons by distributing one filled bookbag to each student and encouraging families to engage in one of the suggested activities at home

The April New Teacher Development session will take place on Wednesday, April 6th, 2022 between 4:00pm - 6:00pm. Teachers who are new to Newark (regardless of previous experience) are expected to attend 7 of the 9 monthly sessions. There will be two NBOE departments presenting in April - Technology and also Early Childhood.

Girls Who Code is offering two exciting summer programs for current high school students who identify as girls or non-binary. They can choose from a 2-week immersion program or a 6-week self-paced program that will allow them to learn coding skills, network with others as well as provide them with career resources.
The program is free and they offer a need-based grant of up to $500 for eligible students who complete the Summer Immersion Program. Please encourage interested students to apply. Any questions please reach out to Tim Nellegar.

Thanks to CDC Supplemental Funds, the NBOE is excited to partner with Newark Yoga Movement to offer FREE virtual yoga sessions. These sessions offer self-regulation tools, tips, and supports to relieve stress, anxiety, and trauma heightened by the pandemic. The yoga series will be offered twice a month through June 2022. Each class is 45-minutes. No prior experience is needed to participate.

This 90-minute webinar on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, 3:30pm - 5:00 pm - will focus on state and federal mandates and policies regarding LGBTQ+ youth. Explore methods to seamlessly incorporate LGBTQ+ instruction into your lessons and learn the mandates for transgender students. A new template resource for creating a plan with transgender students will be made available to participants. Recommended for all staff, particularly health teachers, guidance counselors and administrators.

Health boosters: Fill up on color, like kale, beets, carrots and red peppers. Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit. Cook with healthier fats, like olive, coconut, canola or peanut oil. Choose healthy protein sources, like fish, beans, seeds and nuts. Go for whole grains, like oatmeal or brown rice.
There will be a refresher on Gizmos for any high school science teacher who would like to attend. The session will take place on March 14th at 3 pm via the link below. Teachers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity- to learn about how Gizmos can be incorporated into science lessons, to hear how other teachers are using Gizmos in their classrooms, and to ask questions about the platform.

Submit Student Artwork to Hope, Healing and Resistance Statewide

Submissions accepted through March 31, 2022. The NJDOE, in collaboration with Arts Ed NJ and the Art Educators of New Jersey, invites New Jersey students to participate in the Hope, Healing and Resilience through the COVID-19 Pandemic Art Showcase & Installation Project. Students from preschool to 12th grade are encouraged to submit a photo of original piece of two-dimensional (2-D) art that conveys positive messages of hope, healing, and resilience created after March 2020. Selected artwork will be displayed on the NJDOE website and in NJDOE offices.

The submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
