Message from the Office of Teaching & LearningDear Teachers and Instructional Staff, As we prepare to begin the new marking period on November 6th, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible dedication and passion you bring to our classrooms every day. Our Phase 1 Teaching & Learning visits have highlighted your unwavering commitment to fostering student growth and learning, and it is clear that we are on a strong trajectory toward high student achievement thanks to your efforts. This year, our focus on Writing Across the Curriculum leverages Doug Lemov’s Everybody Writes strategy, which aims to deepen students’ construction of knowledge through writing. Writing is not just a skill but a powerful tool for learning across all subject areas. When students write regularly, they engage more deeply with content, reflect on their understanding, and solidify their learning. Complementing this, we are integrating Oracy strategies such as Think-Write-Pair-Share, Idea Wave, Socratic Seminar, and Reciprocal Teaching. These approaches encourage rich, rigorous dialogue and help students articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. This emphasis on spoken language supports students in developing communication skills that are essential across disciplines. These strategies align closely with Lev Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, which emphasizes that learning is fundamentally a social process. Through collaborative dialogue and shared writing experiences, students operate within their Zone of Proximal Development, where they can achieve higher levels of understanding with the support of peers and teachers. By embedding daily Everybody Writes activities alongside the use of Cornell Notes, students not only deepen their comprehension but also reflect on their learning in a social context that reinforces and extends their knowledge. As we move forward, I encourage you to continue weaving these writing and oracy strategies into your daily instruction. Let us continue to challenge our students to think critically, write thoughtfully, speak confidently, and take pride in their academic achievements. Your leadership and dedication are the driving forces behind their success. Together, we are building a strong foundation for their future, one that empowers them to reach new heights. Thank you for your hard work, passion, and commitment. Wishing you a productive and fulfilling marking period! Warm regards, Sylvia Esteves Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning |

OSE Resources and Updates (New)Contact: LaPrice Weatherington, Office of Special Education Email: lweatherington@nps.k12.nj.us Since the standard Amira assessment is an oral reading test, students who are non-verbal, blind or visually impaired, or deaf or hard of hearing may need accommodations such as the paper-based format to complete the assessment. Teachers are asked to confer with their students’ case manager before completing a request to ensure the students are appropriate for the assessment. Information will be forthcoming for teachers to help identify those students, as well as training on how to administer the paper-based assessment. The first week of November is dedicated to celebrating School Psychologists. Resources are available to help schools prepare for Inclusive Schools Week which is celebrated in December. See the attached for additional announcements and upcoming professional development opportunities for teachers, paraprofessionals, CSTs, and Long-Term Substitutes serving in the role as a special education teacher. |
