Colleagues,
1) Emancipation Celebration – After 22 years of state control, Newark Public Schools were finally emancipated on Feb 1, 2018. TODAY!! Friday, February 9, there will be a celebration at Newark Symphony Hall at 4 PM to mark this tremendous occasion! All NTU members and allies are invited!
2) February Increment – One question we get a lot is "What is a February Increment?" Under NJ law, generally staff salary increases only happen twice a year, in September and in February.
When you get your increment is based on your hire date. If you were hired between March 1 and October 15, you will get your increment in September each year. If you were hired between October 16th and the last day of February, you will get your increment in February each year.
As the values of the step typically increase from year to year, staff who get February increments may see a “cost of living” increase in September before getting their full step in February
Example:
September Increment
Step 7 Universal Guide (June 2017) – $57,381
Step 8 Universal Guide (Sept 2017) – $59,093
Step 9 Universal Guide (Sept 2018) – $61,110
February Increment
Step 7 Universal Guide (June 2017) – $57,381
Step 7 Universal Guide (Sept 2017) – $58,242
Step 8 Universal Guide (Feb 2018) – $59,093
Step 8 Universal Guide (Sept 2018) – $59,684
Step 9 Universal Guide (Feb 2019) – $61,110

3) Special Education Assistance - The NTU has an email set up for members to get assistance with special education questions and issues: NTUSpEd@NewarkTeachersunion.
4) The JANUS DECISION - The NTU, and every union across the country is anticipating a decision by the US Supreme Court within the next two months on the JANUS v AFSCME case (The JANUS case). This case is another attack on Unions of every kind and its decision may have IMMEDIATE ramifications. We are cooperating with our State and National unions to develop a plan of action should the decision come down against unions. Now more than ever, we must remain UNION STRONG and UNITED.
