NTU Update - December 11, 2015

Colleagues,

1)      NTU Website – Remember to visit the Newark Teachers Union website!  We are still collecting members’ class size issues and contract proposals (click on our Survey section).  You can also send in address changes or email address changes to us right on the home page.  We will be adding a formal Advisory survey to the website over the next few days.

2)      Membership Meetings – We have confirmed dates and location for our upcoming regional membership meetings:

• Speedway Academies for Monday, December 14, 2015 4 PM (WEST REGION)

• Barringer STEAM \ Arts and Humanities School for Wednesday, December 16, 2015 4:30 PM (NORTH REGION)

• Ann Street for Thursday, December 17, 2015 4:00 PM (EAST REGION)

All the meetings will have the same agenda, so you only need to attend one.  URGENT MATTERS WILL BE DISCUSSED including CONTRACT PROPOSALS!  Please make every attempt to attend!  Please bring your membership card or ID.  You must be an active NTU member to attend.

3)      HCAMS Workshop -  Our colleagues from HCAMS (HealthCare Assistance with Member Support) will be doing an afterschool workshop at the Newark Teachers Union on December 15, 2015.   They will be explaining the services they offer and how union members can access them.  This is an important workshop, especially for new reps and teachers.  HCAMS offers a wide variety of services that many members have no idea exist.  These services can be vital in ensuring your physical and mental health and wellbeing.

4)      NTUniversity – The NTU is looking to expand the reach of our Educational Research and Dissemination Department.  We are looking for NTU members who would like to come down to the NTU and help present workshops on a variety of important issues, especially in regards to areas like classroom management, math, bilingual, ELL, and Special Education.   If you would be interested, please reach out to NTU Secretary/Treasurer Michael Iovino – miovino@newarkteachersunion.com.

5)      Every Student Succeeds Act – A few weeks ago we announced that the US Congress was working on a massive overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act.  We are happy to announce that the ESSA has been signed into law by President Obama.  For more information, including what this means for New Jersey, please visit our website at the link above.
