NTU Update - October 14, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

1)    Respect the Contract Update – Reports of RTC success keep coming in; sadly, so do reminders of why we fight. At an NPS discipline hearing last week, a teacher was disciplined for coming in 10 minutes late (five 2 minute occurrences) while the district neglected to take into consideration that he had spent the last five years staying a half hour late each day assisting disadvantaged students.

He will not stay late any more.

We have scheduled to resume negotiations with the Newark Public Schools on 10/19. Let's show our negotiations team we support them by fighting within the principles of the RTC Phase I initiative. Don't give them a second more/less of your time. They don't respect it. If you see someone violating the contract "redirect" them.

2)    Retirement/Resignation - In the event you are seeking to retire or resign it will be in your best interest before doing so or writing a letter to the District informing them of your intent to retire or resign that you first speak to the Newark Teacher’s Union in order to insure yourself that you are following proper procedure in accord with the law in order that you do not harm yourself personally or professionally.

3)    Seton Hall Information Sessions – From Seton Hall: Seton Hall University will be holding our next Open House/Information Session for our Executive M.A. & Ed.S Degree Programs in Education Leadership, Management, and Policy on Monday, November 14th, 2016 at 4:30pm at the NTU Offices at 1919 Broad Street, Newark.

Our program will enable you to work towards a Supervisor and Principal certifications through a nationally acclaimed leadership program.  This cohort program is being offered in Newark at a special discount as a result of the partnership between NTU and Seton Hall University.

4)    Respect the Contract Toolkit – On the NTU website, we have posted a variety of resources that you can use to help with the Respect the Contract campaign, including forms to ensure you get paid for additional duties and coverage.

5)    Kudos – The new NTU website is regularly updated with a wide variety of important information, including a calendar of events, and how to’s for topics like FMLA’s.  If you have anything you’d like added to the website (kudos, pictures/videos from your school, etc), just send it to mmaillaro@newarkteachersunion.com.  There a lot of amazing things going on in the Newark Public Schools, and it’s important to highlight them!
