Thanksgiving offers all of us a time to gather, pause, reflect, and name what we are thankful for. From all of us here in Teaching and Learning, please know that we are grateful for the many ways you serve and educate our students and their families. Your presence in our students’ lives gives direction, knowledge, dignity, grace, and hope. Thank you.

Free Education Week Subscription (New)

The District has purchased access to Education Week for all educators and administrators. You can find the link to Education Week in Clever under Professional Development. To claim your free account and read about everything happening in the world of education, including strategies for your classroom, ideas for your school, and the latest school policies, follow these steps:

Adult Education Is Hiring Teachers and Aides (New)

The Adult Education department is hiring teachers and teacher aides for the 2024 Spring semester. Classes start February 8, 2024 and run through May 10, 2024 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm on various evenings in every ward of the city.

New Teacher Induction (New)

Induction sessions will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Be sure to register for the New Teacher Induction sessions that will take place on Tuesday, December 12th from 4-6pm. December’s session will focus on review and planning for improvement before Annuals. The registration and meeting links for each month can be found in the induction schedule linked here:

NBOE - KEANetwork (New)

  1. CE/Limited CE Holders Only: Provisional program selections must be submitted immediately for provisional license registration.
  2. All licenses must be submitted to the certification team upon issuance.


Pathways Programs: All certification progress must be uploaded via Google Form:

Mentorship: All novice Provisional and Pathways employees should be paired with a mentor.

Montclair State University (MSU) Bilingual/ESL Program Update (New)

Please be advised of the following criteria before applying for the MSU Bilingual/ESL Program:

  1. The employee must possess a Standard or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) NJ teaching license.
  2. For Certificate of Eligibility (CE) or LImited CE holders, they must have completed one year of a  NJDOE approved Provisional Teaching - Alternate Route program.

Mental Health Resources for Staff

Please find attached Mental Health Resources for staff. This document contains a list of different mental health directories that can be used to support the mental health of employees who are in need. The providers listed on this page are all able to be filtered by a variety of factors, including type of concern, gender, language, location, insurance, private pay, teletherapy or in-person, etc.

CPR/AED Certification for H/PE Teachers & Athletic Coaches

Contact: Krystle Rhett, Office of Health, Physical Education (OHPE) & Athletics

The OHPE & Athletics will be offering free CPR/AED training to Health and Physical Education teachers and athletic coaches in the district who need recertification. This is a blended course that requires all participants to register and take the online blended course first (3 hours), followed by an in-person practical with our certified instructors (2 hours) upon completion of the online portion.

PowerSchool Support Form

Use the PowerSchool Support Form to request PowerTeacher assistance. Teachers should consult with the technology lead, PowerSchool clerk, or the administrator of record to troubleshoot access issues before submitting the form.

Traditional Mentor Training

The next mentor training sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, November 15th and Wednesday, November 29th. The November 15th session is for 1st or 2nd year mentors. The November 29th session is for mentors who have been participating for 3 or more years.

Special Education Updates and OSE Professional Development Opportunities

The DLM IE Fall Assessment window is open. OSE will host DLM Office Hours for questions. Contact Maria Jara for DLM PD resources or to provide supports during a PLC.

November is "School Psychologist" month. Please be sure to shout out your CST Psychologist for their dedication in supporting students, families, and teachers.

Inclusive Schools Week is celebrated the first week of December. See attached for ideas to celebrate diverse learners & Inclusive Practices. Share back pictures and success stories regarding collaboration of general education students and students with disabilities.


Adult Education Evening Classes

The Adult Education Department offers evening classes to all Newark residents and District employees. This includes Spanish 1, Computer Technology, Business 101, Fitness Aerobics, ESL, and GED classes.

NJ Teacher Loan Redemption Program

Contact: Randy Schrader, Human Resource Services

NJ teachers who meet the eligibility requirements can receive redemptions up to $5,000 for each consecutive full school-year of approved employment service. The total four year loan redemption shall not exceed $20,000.

Eligibility Requirements

  • NJ Resident
  • Not in default on loans
  • Certified by NJDOE to teach in NJ
  • Hired after January 18, 2022
  • Employed at the time of application
  • Not selected previously for program
  • Written contract with HESAA

Application Period: November 1, 2023 - February 1, 2024

National Board Certification

The District is encouraging all teachers who have at least three years of teaching experience and a NJ teaching license in good standing to apply for the National Board Certification. This would be an opportunity to be recognized nationally and within our District as a Distinguished Professional Educator.

Office of Educational Technology PD Sessions

The Office of Educational Technology is excited to offer Professional Development Sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting September 12th through December 14th. These voluntary one hour sessions will be offered virtually from 3:00-4:00p. Tuesdays will focus on Teaching Digital Citizenship in the Classroom and Thursdays will focus on Using Educational Strategies with our Academic Platforms. Empowering Educators: Unwind and Recharge with Yoga!

We are excited to continue offering free virtual yoga classes to all NBOE staff! Thanks to grant funding, the District has continued to partner with Newark Yoga Movement to provide yoga classes twice a month through the end of the school year.
