The Preschool Teacher of the Year Celebration will take place on June 13th! Tickets are still available. Please see the flyer below for more details: Additionally, I am excited to offer a tremendous congratulations to all of the students and schools that participated in the 2022 Newark Math Olympics! The purpose of this competition was to foster and provide a competitive experience in mathematics for Newark students in grades 6 through 12 in the subject areas of: Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, PreCalculus, Calculus, and Probability/Statistics. A plaque, a TI-Nspire graphic calculator, and a Math Olympics t-shirt will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each subject. Awards will be delivered to students’ schools the week of June 13, 2022. This year, 705 students participated in the Virtual Math Olympics. Winners have not yet been determined so stay tuned to the next edition of Teacher Talk! MAP PD for School Teams: EOY Analysis + Student Growth (New) Contact: Rochanda Jackson, OPPET Email: rjackson@nps.k12.nj.us On Wednesday, June 22nd, NWEA will host an optional PD session focused on examining Spring 2022 MAP results for members of School Test Coordination Teams.Session Activity will include: - Model walk through the Student Growth Summary using district data
- Reflective questions for participants to analyze data.
- Review of data facts, possible explanations, and action steps based on needs, e.g., School improvement planning and professional learning for teachers

The Transformative Education Network launches the TEN Honors Award (New) Contact: Matthew Brewster Email: mbrewster@nps.k12.nj.us University High School Social Studies teacher, Peter De La Cruz, is the recipient of the first ever Transformative Education Network (TEN) Honors Award! The TEN at Montclair State University prepares and develops teachers who teach toward antiracism and social justice. As evidence of his commitment to social justice, Peter submitted student presentations from a unit he created titled, “The Ableism Project.” In this unit, Peter’s 10th grade students came to understand the history and impact of ableism in society as well as how people with disabilities are oppressed.

The Office of Special Education Summer Residency (New) Contact: Amy Woods Email: a1woods@nps.k12.nj.us The Office of Special Education (OSE) is offering a 3-day "UDL Teacher Residency" for both general education and special education teachers. Teachers will develop a shared understanding of UDL principles and guidelines. Through professional learning on the Six-Step Lesson Planning Cycle, participants will be provided with the knowledge and tools to implement changes to their lesson planning, instructional practices, and overall mindsets that will enhance students. The refund dates are as follows for the option you have selected: - One Check Option – issued in one (1) lump sum on Friday, June 10, 2022.
- Four Check Option – issued in four (4) equal installments on July 22nd, August 5th, August 19th and September 2nd 2022.

Grades 7-9 Math teachers are invited to learn/design curricular replacement units for grade 7 and Algebra 1 students using interactive computer programming. Grade 7 Data Science modules incorporate data visualization, measures of center/spread, programming, and linear regression. Algebra 1 modules involve designing characters using mathematical concepts such as coordinate planes, order of operations, ratio and proportion, and domain and range (the underpinnings of algebra). - June 11 - 9:00am-3:30pm (Virtual)
