Colleagues,
1. Contract Update – A few weeks ago, the Newark Teachers Union and the Newark Public Schools announced that we had reached a tentative contract agreement. Since then, the NTU and NPS negotiations teams have been finalizing the language and salary guides in preparation for informational sessions with the Executive Board, Building Reps, membership and then a ratification vote. This is a tremendous amount of work, and we hope that we will be able to share more specific details of the agreement over the next few weeks. There will be plenty of time and opportunity to ask questions between the release of the details and the ratification vote. Thank you for your patience.
While we appreciate your patience, we would like to at least inform you that while exact numbers and salary guides are still being worked on, we can say that there WILL be retro payments, steps WILL advance, and no steps will be lost.
REMINDER! ONLY FULL DUES PAYING MEMBERS CAN VOTE FOR OUR CONTRACT AND IN OUR UPCOMING EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTION! IF YOUR PAYSTUB SAYS "AGENCY SHOP" YOU ARE NOT A FULL NTU MEMBER. CONTACT SUBRINA SCREVEN AT THE NTU TO ENSURE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE IMPORTANT VOTES.
2. NTU Member Recognition - Last year, the Newark Teachers Union recognized 14 members who were nominated by their peers to be recognized for their service for the students and community of Newark.
Who are these members? They’re the ones who when you’re putting up a bulletin board stop and help you cutting into their own lunch period. They’re the ones who ask staff-centric questions at staff meetings and get away with it because they’re knowledgeable and respected by colleagues and administration alike.
If you would like to nominate someone, please fill out the attached application, or apply on our website. Nominations must be received by Friday, March 24!
3. NTU Scholarship Dinner - The NTU Education Foundation is proud to announce its 19th Annual Albert Shanker Scholarship Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at The Robert Treat Hotel, 50 Park Place, Newark, NJ at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for this special program are $70.00, which includes a buffet dinner and dessert, along with music and a special program for your enjoyment.
This year, the Newark Teachers Union is proud to induct Christine Veliz into the Newark Teachers Union Hall of Fame. Christine worked in Newark for over 30 years and served as a NTU Building Rep and Vice President. She continued to be very active in the labor movement even after she left the Newark Public Schools.
We are relying on your continued support and good will to continue this worthy endeavor. Rest assured that the recipients will be held to an even greater level of academic and community achievements.
